Three local companies have joined together to create a new
kind of event in San Luis Obispo… a virtual wine tasting done completely via Twitter.
The event, which is open to anyone who has a Twitter account, is Wednesday,
September 23rd, 2009.
“At Whizbang we have a monthly ‘Wine and Whine’ event, where
we taste wine and whine about the economy. It started as a way for us to
socialize with our clients on a monthly basis and do outreach. But mostly just
to drink good wine with good friends,” said Whizbang co-owner Ellen Curtis.
Each month a different winemaker would volunteer to pour at
the Whizbang office, such as Tolosa, Ancient Peaks and Autry Cellars. Guests at
the event would enter their review live on Whizbang’s wine blog, sharing their
one or two sentence opinion of the wine to share with others online.
“We had some clients who could not make the 5:30 – 7:00 p.m.
Wednesday time slot, so we thought there has to be some way to include those
who couldn’t physically come to the Whizbang office to taste,” said Frank
Scotti, co-owner of Whizbang. “At first we thought maybe they could go on the
Whizbang blog from home.”
Ellen Curtis of Whizbang thought that if everyone was told
which bottle of wine to taste, they could buy the bottle at their convenience
and could Twitter their review from home, or even on their cell phone. With a
virtual wine tasting, everyone can taste and review at their convenience, and
no one would miss the event.
“The cool part about Twitter is you can enter a search term,
like winesday, and see what everyone is saying about the subject in real time.
Live. As it happens,” said Whizbang’s Social Media Specialist Cary Conrady. “We
contacted Sextant with the idea and if they would be interested in having
everyone review their wine virtually on Twitter.”
Sextant agreed to offer a discount of 25% off their
award-winning flagship wine, the 2007 “Wheelhouse” Zinfandel, to anyone who
mentioned the Twitter virtual tasting or used the discount code #winesday at
sextantwines.com.
“Sextant is just getting into social networking and online
marketing. We started our Facebook site a year ago and just started a Twitter.
We have some really great fans and it has been exciting to see the chatter
about our wines on both sites,” said Teresa Dellaganna of Sextant Wines. “We
are really looking forward to this Twitter virtual tasting event and getting
our wine into more peoples hands to let them taste what we’re always raving
about. And it is a great opportunity for people to see what others think about
our wine.”
Sweet Earth Chocolates in San Luis Obispo, who just opened a
new store on 1445 Monterey Street, jumped at the idea of the Twitter tasting
and is offering a free chocolate bar to anyone who comes into their new store
and mentions the virtual Twitter tasting. Sweet Earth is giving away their 72%
cocoa bittersweet chocolate bar, as bittersweet chocolate pairs best with
Zinfandel wine.
“Chocolate is a lot like wine. It has a lot of depth and
layering to it. It’s a lot of fun to pair dark chocolate with red wine,
especially our local reds because of their flavor profile,” said Joanne Currie
of Sweet Earth Chocolates. “We are giving away free chocolate bars to Twitter
tasters as an opportunity to let people discover how well chocolate pairs with
wine.”
The Twitter tasting event is scheduled for Wednesday,
September 23rd. Anyone interesting in participating in the virtual
tasting can simply drop by the Sextant tasting room for 25% off the
“Wheelhouse” Zinfandel and the Sweet Earth Chocolates store for a free
chocolate bar for pairing. Participants simply write their one or two sentence
wine review on their Twitter, with #winesday at the end of their review any
time on September 23rd. Participants can simply search for
“#winesday” on Twitter to see everyone’s review of the wine in real-time.
“Whizbang now has over 1,000 Twitter followers and
communicates on Twitter daily, so we have personally seen how Twitter can work
for local businesses. We are really excited to see what everyone says about the
wine and chocolate pairing on Twitter, and join the conversation,” said Curtis.
